The Unity Situation...

Posted by Groundsprite - September 21st, 2023

If you don't know, Unity Technologies - the company known for the most popular game engine "Unity" have recently introduced a runtime fee plan that charges developers every time a game is being installed (though that will only start when a game hits a certain number of downloads after 1st of January 2024). Understandably, this move was met with MASSIVE BACKLASH from developers for A LOT of good reasons. This also affects me as I'm also using unity for game development. If this runtime fee isn't cancelled, I'll have to move to another engine and this will likely delay my smaller projects and bigger ones like Sky-HI.

@underscore8298 I think you might want to know this...

Reject unity. Return to scrach

How 'bout this:
To use a work-around sollution: If you know what the amount of downloads is, until the fee kicks in. Keep track of all the downloads your game gets. If it's getting close to the amount where you'd get charged: remove the game. Then put the same game back up again, but under an ever-so-slightly different name.

A lot of people are pushing for Godot (a free and open-source program) as an alternative, and I myself am interested in Godot, though some people argue it's not a perfect replacement (some have stated that Godot is somewhat slow.) Blender (another free and open-source program) also has a built-in game engine, which is also interesting, though according to documentation games made in the engine have to comply with the GNU GPL for most cases. There is one case cited where you don't have to comply with the GPL however:

Yeah, I heard about that. I really don’t much about it, but I’ve also heard that Godoy is a really good alternative, if you wanted to try that. Sorry to hear that, hope you find a good replacement for it. Does this mean you’ll have to take the demo of Sky-HI down?

I might switch to godot if it supports mobile platforms alongside pc (as I have considered the game for mobile too). Switching an engine is NOT easy because the engine works differently and I have to recreate the base game and all the levels from scratch, even though I have game files and assets still available. This also means I have to rewrite 1000+ lines of code. The demo will stay up as long as it means no charges :)
